GTA V Maps

The Grand Theft Auto V map is based loosely on Southern California, with the main feature being the city of Los Santos, inspired by the city of Los Angeles, California. Beyond the city, the map includes hills, countryside, mountain ranges and beaches. Rockstar may or may not reveal the map before the game is released, but until then all we can do is predict what it looks like based on information from previews. There is also a great deal we can deduce about the map from official screenshots and videos.
After the game is released, we will assemble an interactive map which enables you to plunge into the districts of Los Santos from the safety of your own chair! The map will include locations of every item for you 100% nutters (unique stunt jumps, weapon pickups, collectables, etc.); just like the previous maps we created for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto IV.
GTA 5 map How Big Is The Map
Rockstar promised a big map!
The map covers a large area based loosely on SoCal. How large it is exactly remains to be seen, but Rockstar assures us that it's big. Responding to a question from US magazine Game Informer, Rockstar's VP of Creative, Dan Houser, once again stressed that the map will be big:
"Game Informer: You just released the GTA V trailer. Can you talk about that project in any respect? Obviously, it looks like it's going back to San Andreas.
Dan Houser: I've got to be real careful here, or they will drag me through the office and whip me with barbwire. I will stick to exactly what's in the press release. It's Los Santos and the surrounding countryside - and a very big map."
- Dan Houser, Rockstar Games
From the available screenshots and videos, Los Santos appears to be around the same size as GTA IV's Liberty City. There is also a fully explorable Mount Chiliad, a military base, a Salton Sea region, Wine County and a fully explorable ocean floor along the Los Santos coastline. There are also underwater caves.
Map Layout
The layout will resemble the real layout of Southern California. It won't be a block-for-block recreation, nor will it be a tarted up version of GTA San Andreas. The city will include all the key areas such as Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Compton and Downtown (with different names, of course) while omitting some of the less interesting areas. Beyond the city, we can expect to see areas based on the Angeles National Forest, and the huge desert that lies beyond it. The extensive topographic variation of Southern California is sure to make GTAV's map interesting and fun to explore.
