GTA V Characters

GTA V is taking a bold new direction with the series. The game features three playable characters that you can switch between during the story. When you opt to switch characters, a Google Earth-like view appears and then the camera zooms in on the player that you selected. You can access any of the three protagonists off-mission with free-roam, but you cannot access them on-mission (once you are in the mission you can still switch, but only for unique objectives).
Franklin
Each character has their own unique story-arch, likeness, personality and lives when you are not controlling them. So, for example, if you are playing as Michael, Trevor could be leading a seperate life off-camera to what you are doing with Michael.
It has also been confirmed that some characters from GTA IV will be returning, however it will not be Niko Bellic or any of the other major characters.
The Protagonists
Michael
- Michael is a retired bank robber, who made a deal with the FIB and is currently in the witness protection program.
- Lives in a mansion in Rockford Hills (based on real-life Beverly Hills).
- Married to wife Amanda, and has a teenage daughter named Tracy, as well as teenage son Jimmy.
- Has an awkward father-son relationship; his kids and wife spend most of his money and is in a bit of a crisis, and is pulled back into crime through this.
- Michael is the brains of the protagonist trio. He is a "smooth operator," skilled, and the effective leader.
Trevor
- Former military pilot.
- Lives in a trailer in Blaine County (desert).
- Used to work a few bank jobs with Michael back in the day.
- Drug-dependent, always willing to put his neck on the line (not kidding either, look at the tattoo on his neck!).
Franklin
- In his early 20s; works at a luxury car dealership.
- In the short demo previewed by Game Informer, Franklin was driving around Vespucci Beach (GTAV's equivalent of Venice Beach) in his 9F (equivalent to Audio R8).
- He goes hustling now and then, and he met Michael during one of these events (through a repo job).
- He's a skilled driver and sniper.
- Michael is his mentor.
Lamar - Franklin's crazy friend. Kind of ambitious and more of a wild person than Franklin is. Franklin is more serious than Lamar.
Jimmy - Michael's son who is a lazy, blazed out 20-year-old kid who spends Daddy's money. Doesn't have a really close relationship with his father, Michael.
Ron - Trevor's best friend. He is a conspiracy theorist who lives in a trailer. He's always paranoid and is also afraid to spend time with Trevor.
Amanda - Michael's wife. She is a pretty fiesty character and isn't the girl you'd expect to see in a GTA game. She is bound to her and Michael's past lives to the point where she can't stand him anymore.
Tracy - Michael's daughter. Typical spoilt brat who also spends her father's money. She goes on shopping sprees.
GTA V Maps

The Grand Theft Auto V map is based loosely on Southern California, with the main feature being the city of Los Santos, inspired by the city of Los Angeles, California. Beyond the city, the map includes hills, countryside, mountain ranges and beaches. Rockstar may or may not reveal the map before the game is released, but until then all we can do is predict what it looks like based on information from previews. There is also a great deal we can deduce about the map from official screenshots and videos.
After the game is released, we will assemble an interactive map which enables you to plunge into the districts of Los Santos from the safety of your own chair! The map will include locations of every item for you 100% nutters (unique stunt jumps, weapon pickups, collectables, etc.); just like the previous maps we created for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto IV.
How Big Is The Map After the game is released, we will assemble an interactive map which enables you to plunge into the districts of Los Santos from the safety of your own chair! The map will include locations of every item for you 100% nutters (unique stunt jumps, weapon pickups, collectables, etc.); just like the previous maps we created for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto IV.
The map covers a large area based loosely on SoCal. How large it is exactly remains to be seen, but Rockstar assures us that it's big. Responding to a question from US magazine Game Informer, Rockstar's VP of Creative, Dan Houser, once again stressed that the map will be big:
From the available screenshots and videos, Los Santos appears to be around the same size as GTA IV's Liberty City. There is also a fully explorable Mount Chiliad, a military base, a Salton Sea region, Wine County and a fully explorable ocean floor along the Los Santos coastline. There are also underwater caves."Game Informer: You just released the GTA V trailer. Can you talk about that project in any respect? Obviously, it looks like it's going back to San Andreas.
Dan Houser: I've got to be real careful here, or they will drag me through the office and whip me with barbwire. I will stick to exactly what's in the press release. It's Los Santos and the surrounding countryside - and a very big map."- Dan Houser, Rockstar Games
Map Layout
The layout will resemble the real layout of Southern California. It won't be a block-for-block recreation, nor will it be a tarted up version of GTA San Andreas. The city will include all the key areas such as Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Compton and Downtown (with different names, of course) while omitting some of the less interesting areas. Beyond the city, we can expect to see areas based on the Angeles National Forest, and the huge desert that lies beyond it. The extensive topographic variation of Southern California is sure to make GTAV's map interesting and fun to explore.

GTA V Weapons

It looks like there will be many types of weapons to choose from in GTA V. From explosives, melee, submachine guns, assault rifles, pistols, shotguns and sniper rifles to choose from there will be lots of big rampages to start at your will. Here are some of the weapons which have been revealed in trailers and artworks:
Add-Ons
Golf Club?
Might golf clubs, first featured in GTA: Vice City, be making a return as a weapon?
Might a hammer be used as a weapon in GTA V?
Might a Tennis Racket be used as a weapon in GTA V?
A baton commonly used by law enforcement to control individuals if they get out of hand.
A new pistol is coming to GTA V. Looks to be fully automatic. It could be one of the following: Desert Eagle, Glock 20L, HK MK23 or a crossover between some of them.
The Beretta 92FS is a form of semi-automatic pistol.
The Colt M1911 is another form of single fired, semi-automatic pistol.
The Kalashnikov-type rifle shown in the trailer appears to be based heavily on the Norinco Type 56-2, going by the grip placement and the design of the stock. This is probably very arbitrary and only intended to be a 'generic AK' by Rockstar, considering their haphazard weapon designs in the past games.
The Norinco Type 56 is a Chinese clone of the AK-47, and is a lot more common in the US than Russian AK derivatives. (at least it was, before imports of Chinese-manufactured firearms were banned) Due to this they are often seen in Hollywood productions standing in for Russian AKs, which is probably the reason Rockstar ended up using one as their source model.
The Type 56, like its Russian brothers, fires the 7.62x39mm intermediate rifle cartridge, capable of breaching light body armor, and has an effective range of 300 to 400 meters before it becomes too inaccurate to reliably hit a target.
The TAR-21 is a bullpup assault rifle with semi-automatic and fully automatic capabilities.
The short-barreled variant of the classic AR-15. Capable of firing at long range in both semi-automatic and fully automatic.
This gun is essentially a refinement of the Colt M4 carbine with the inclusion of a gas-piston from the Heckler & Koch G36.
The Mini Uzi is a 9mm submachine gun and can fire up to 600 rounds per minute with a maximum effective range of up to 200 metres.
The MP5 is a 9mm submachine gun capable of firing 800 rounds per minute with a maximum effective range of up to 200 metres.
This shotgun is a special, all purpose, pump-action 12 gauge shotgun. Capable of holding 5 rounds.
This sniper rifle is a possible L96 AWP. It's apart of the bolt-action sniper rifle family, and it also has a shorter 24 in (610 mm) barrel in comparison to an AW model. The AWP is normally chambered for 7.62 mm NATO/.308 Winchester or .243 Winchester ammunition though it could be chambered for other cartridges.
In GTA V you now have the ability to pick up a gasoline canister, spread the fuel across the floor, set it alight and BOOM. Feast your eyes on fire!
Add-Ons
- Red-dot scopes
- Sound suppressors.
- Flashlights.
- Handguards.
- Shoulder stocks.

While we are yet to find any definitive information about the cars of GTAV, below is what we have managed to gather from the various forms of information we've received so far.
Cars
Cars
Bodhi
This military-looking offroader is based on a 60's Kaiser Jeep M715, and probably named after Patrick Swayze's char-acter in the movie 'Point Break'.
Caddy
The golf cart looks unchang- ed from the version we saw in TBoGT.
Cheetah
The Cheetah, despite appearing in GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas, was missed in GTA4. This screenshot of the Cheetah was released on August 20, 2012.
Cognoscenti GT?
The Cognoscenti from IV might have been recast as a sportier Bentley Continental GT shooting-brake.
Unknown
Though too blurry to be sure, this small vehicle looks a lot like a Toyota iQ.
Emperor
The Emperor first appeared as a 90s-era sedan in San Andreas. An earlier 70s version was introduced in GTA4, and is to appear a second time in GTAV.
Feltzer
The convertible Feltzer's triangular rearlights are an easy giveaway - making this its second appearance in a GTA game.
Futo
Another GTA4 vehicle, the Futo is a well-balanced Japanese compact.
Huntley
Looking more like a regular Range Rover, this is probably the unsporty version of the Huntley Sport we know from IV.
Landstalker
The Landstalker has appeared in every GTA since the third, and seems to be unchanged from its most recent design from GTA4.
Manana
Looking very similar to its counterpart from IV.
Mesa Grande
The Mesa Grande is a Jeep Wrangler knock-off that appeared in Vice City and San Andreas, and seems to be featured here for the third time.
Peyote
The Peyote makes a return from IV, most likely with an operational soft top, like Franklin's Dewbauchee in the first trailer.
Phoenix?
This looks a lot like the Phoenix from Vice City and San Andreas - a Trans Am lookalike.
Premier
Very clearly the Premier as it appeared in GTA4, after its original incarnation in San Andreas.
Oracle?
The Oracle from GTA4 was heavily influenced by the BMW 5-Series. This car, though different to the original Oracle, looks a lot like a large BMW sedan.
Sentinel XS
This convertible shares some design traits with the BMW 3-Series, which traditionally has been the job of the Sentinel. Seems to sport a folding hardtop.
New Sports Car
The red convertible Dewbauchee Franklin drives in the first trailer.
Unknown
This SUV is not recognisable as anything from any previous GTA, but some have pointed out its similarities to the Infiniti FX.
Tornado
First seen in San Andreas, the Tornado was based on the Chevrolet Bel Air.
Comet
The Comet from GTA IV is returning. In this screenshot the Comet has a spoiler placed on it.
Patriot
It looks like the Patriot from GTA IV is returning for a second time.
New Sports Car
Similar to a Lotus Elise/Evora hybrid, this car will probably be a hoot to drive.
Hellenbach?
A fancy mix of classic and modern Mustang, this car might be named after the Hellenbach from CTW.
Cavalcade
The Cavalcade from GTA IV is returning.
Diletantte
The Diletantte which made an apperance in GTA IV and its episodes is returning.
Ingot
Some cars are just in the game to make the super cars we all love to drive feel faster. The Ingot returns from IV.
Regina
Another vehicle is returning to GTA V, the Regina. It has appeared in many GTA's and is a 4-door station wagon.
Intruder
The Intruder vehicle which had first appeared in San Andreas and then GTA IV is returning in GTA V.
Rumpo?
Spacious, and slightly wobbly. Seems to be based on an old Chevy Step Van. Might be the return of the Rumpo?
Sabre GT
The Sabre GT which is a muscle car has appeared in previous GTA games. This Sabre GT rendition looks to be the one from GTA IV.
Tow Truck
The curvaceous old Tow Truck is with us yet again, hopefully with the ability to actually tow shit, contrary to its old self from TLaD.
BF Injection
The BF Injection makes a return, this time as a rendition of a Baja Bug.
Hatchback?
Looks like a new hatchback vehicle will be making an appearance in GTA V.
Pickup
In the background, partially obstructed by Chop, we see a double-cab pickup truck not unlike a Ford F-150.
Sedan?
A second Sedan and a possible new iteration of the vehicle will be appearing in GTA V.
Sports car?
An unnamed sports car which has a close resemblance to the Ferrari Testarossa appears to be in GTA V.
Sports car?
An unnamed sports car which has a close resemblance to a Ferrari and or Aston Martin car.
Sports car?
An unnamed sports car which resembles a BMW model or specifically the Fisker Sunset for the bonnet and fenders.
Sports car?
An unnamed sports car which will appear in GTA V.
SUV?
An unnamed SUV car which will appear in GTA V.
Yankee
A lorry that has appeared in numerous GTA's will be coming back in GTA V.
Classic?
A Classic car that appears to have an uncanny resemblance to an Aston Martin DB5.
Bandito
An off-road vehicle which is capable of being driven on sand, muddy areas and for general off-road use.
Camper Van
The first camper van that appeared in a GTA game was in San Andreas. A fitting suit for GTA V since it's being set in Los Santos.
F620
This nifty sports car first seen in TBoGT returns.
SUV
A modern looking SUV similar to a newer Jeep Grand Cherokee, with some Range Rover Evoque mixed in.
Taxi
Sporting the typical color scheme of a Los Angeles taxi, yellow and blue.
Gang Burrito
Seen behind the propeller of Trevor's Cuban 800 in Trailer 2, bearing the logo of the Angles of Death, in the black and red combo they favour so much.
Savanna?
Even pixelated and blurry, it does look a lot like the '63 Chevy Impala that the Savanna from SA was based on. How low does it go?
Picador?
It's easier to see when it's on the move, but that's definitely a bed behind the cabin. Given the other dimensions, it has to be based on an El Camino. First seen in SA.
Large Vehicles
Boxville (Mail Van)
Undeniably the quarter-tail of a Boxville, a van that has appeared in every GTA since Vice City.
Boxville (Taco Van)
A modified version of the Boxville is featuring in GTA V. This resembles similarities to the Ice Cream truck which appeared in GTA IV.
Burrito
A new and improved Burrito sporting new taillights, rear bumper, mirrors and probably more. Here in the BUGSTARS livery from the first trailer.
Trailer
Trailers were introduced in San Andreas along with a trucking minigame. Hopefully we'll see the return of this in GTAV.
Linerunner?
With all these new trailers that need towing, we've gotten some new tools to play with. This might just be a new rendition of the Linerunner.
Tractor
Tractors are returning from San Andreas as revealed by the special pre-order viewfinders.
Trailer: Car Carrier
A trailer capable of carrying vehicles here depicted during a high tense mission. Also seen in the second trailer.
Benson
Returning from IV. Here seen on a bridge in the second trailer.
Large Tow Truck
A larger version of the tow truck has made an appearance in the GTA V trailer.
Phantom
A large truck which had appeared previously in GTA IV is returning to GTA V.
Trashmaster
The garbage truck that has made a prominent feature in several GTA's will once again return.
Dump Truck
An unnamed truck as seen here will be featured in GTA V.
Bus
New Buses will appear in GTA V and they also have a coding system to point out the different buses that will be available.
Cabover Truck
Perfect for tailgating. Looks to be based on a Freightliner Cabover.
Bikes
Vader
Our first glimpse of a motorcycle in the game, this seems to be the Vader from GTA4.
BMX
Bicycles first appeared in San Andreas, and were missed altogether in GTA4.
Road Bike
A typical bike for the road, kicking up sand on the beach.
Mountain Bike
Michael's choice of wheels, but only when his wife makes off with his 9F.
Quad
Quads are returning to Los Santos from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as revealed by this artwork released by Rockstar.
Akuma
The Akuma from GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony is returning.
Wayfarer
While unconfirmed, it seems likely that this is a new rendition of the Wayfarer from SA. Based on a Harley Davidson FLHX Street Glide.
Aircraft
Fighter Jet
A 'conventional' figher jet seemingly based on the F-16E and F/A-18.
Hydra
The Hydra makes a return from SA. Based on a F-35 and a Harrier II, it is capable of vertical take off and landing.
Maverick
The Maverick has been the standard helicopter in the series since GTA3
Police Helicopter
The name of this helicopter is unknown. It is marked 'Police' and appears to be a new addition.
Cropduster
The Cropduster has only ever appeared in San Andreas, and allowed the player to dust... crops. Perhaps an opportunity for a minigame?
Blimp
Traditionally, GTA games always include at least one kind of aircraft that the player isn't allowed to fly. Fingers crossed GTAV will break this trend.
Shamal
The Shamal was a flyable plane in San Andreas, and appeared in cutscenes in GTA4. An updated version of it seems to be one of the small passenger jets available to us.
Skimmer
The Skimmer was a seaplane in Vice City and San Andreas, and its telltale pontoons in the trailer quickly gave it away.
Andromada?
This plane resembles the Andromada [sic] from San Andreas, and its military livery supports this.
Buzzard
The Buzzard military aircraft from GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony is returning to GTA V to wreak havoc.
Cuban 800
The Cuban 800 is a new aircraft which will appear in GTA V.
Unnamed Helicoopter
A new helicopter will be featuring in GTA V and possibly for heist missions.
Emergency Vehicles
Ambulance
The Pony-based ambulance from GTA4 has been used a second time, and looks relatively unchanged.
Police Cruiser
The Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser from GTA4 returns in the black & white livery of the LAPD.
Police Patrol
A police patrol vehicle which will be used by the police officers of Los Santos will be making an appearance in V.
Sheriff's Patrol
A Sheriff's Patrol vehicle which is pretty similar to the Police Patrol vehicle will be used by Los Santos' finest law enforcement.
Coastguard Jetski
A Speedophile 2000, first seen in Trailer #1 - with coastguard livery.
Watercraft
Speedophile 2000
The Speedophile looks to be the second appearance of a jetski in the series, after one was included in Vice City Stories.
Squalo
The Squalo has made an appearance in previous GTA's before V. The first GTA being GTA: Vice City.
